Mizz Whizz

The amazing IT teacher

Of course you can't have a school project without a teacher leading it lucky for us our teacher is Mizz Whizz. Imagine that a whole week and a half of only Mizz Whizz teaching you it's the best week ever.  Mizz Whizz is amazing she's passionate....... fun and knows quite a bit about computers. Mizz Whizz is also super amazing because she's the one that got this whole project going and she believed that we would work hard and succeed.

Women's importance in the meerKAT project

Women used to be very unimportant and no one thought they were as clever or smart as men. Even when they did study maths and science they knew that they would never turn out to be heads of their particular fields. That has changed now though, women are just important as men. They described the working on the meerKAT project as working in a team and doing just as important jobs as men. NEVER underestimate WOMEN POWER!!

The art compitition

For our art lessons we are entering a art competition called animation generation and we will be designing a cartoon character for the show the Land of ooo.The winner will get there drawing on the show.we are going to first design our character on the ipad then next term in art we will draw our character.you can take a look at our  characters on the blog.

Skype chat

Skype chat

On the 14th of June we talked to Thomas, Laura and Kim. We asked them all the questions and got all our answers. Before we started questions Thomas took us on a tour of the offices we got to see where they control the telescopes using the Internet people stay there 24 hourly someone takes the night shift and someone takes the day shift. We also met Thomas's boss Lindsey. It was really cool to get to talk to scientists that have studied 6 years to do these jobs. We learnt that it will actually be quite hard to find life if there is. Kim said she's shore there's life out there but there will probably be no proof  of it.

Thursday the 13th

Skype chat with scientist

On Thursday we had a Skype chat with the scientists involved in the meerKAT and SKA project we asked them loads of questions and got a lot of information from each question. We talked for a long time from 11:00-11:50

Here are some of the questions we asked and the answers
  • Do you have proof that you are going to find something?
  • Well we have found things with smaller telescopes so we know we will be able to find things with bigger telescopes.
  • Why are governments donating so much money if you have no proof that you are going to find something?
  • Governments are donating money because it's a big project to be part of  and it means people spending money and lot's of building so it's good for the economy.

pictures from day one to the 13th

                                                 Asking many technical questions.
                                                        All the laptop work.
Cozy and comfortable working is important.
                                                Talks,conversations and questions.

Skype questions

On the 13th we are going to Skype a professor from the meerKAT project. We get an opportunity to ask Thomas Bennett any questions we want.
These are the questions we  are going to ask:

  • Do you think there is life else where in the universes?
  • What year did this project start?
  • What year do you think it will be finished?
  • Is it exciting to be part of this project?
  • How many telescopes have they made so far?
  • How big are the telescopes?
  • What is anti-matter?
  • Why is this project special?
  • Why are governments putting so much money into this project when they don't know if you are going to find anything?

Tuesday 11th

Today we learned how to upload pictures to our blogs. We defiantly learnt that technology is not always on our side, but after many questions and lots of time it all worked out.We also started looking at the meerKAT (SKA) project. We did our Xhosa lesson on the ipad,we did a xhosa poem and  videoed it and put it on you tube.we also downloaded it onto our blog so take a look.

Wednesday 12 June

Our first day with Twitter...
On Wednesday we started writing on twitter. We first started by writing our post and #justblendit so we could get to know twitter. Then our teacher ms whizz asked us a question and we had to to answer it on twitter (the question was 'do you think the MeerKAT radio telescopes will find other life in space') then we could argue and debate with the other peoples answers. Before we answered the question on  twitter we had a few minutes to look up the SKA/ MeerKAT project and find some information  for later in the week. Twitter was not opening in the beginning either but hey, that's technology. All in all today was loads of fun.

Monday the10th

Our first day with lessons

Today we set up our blogger and learnt how to use it. When we were making our first post and wanted to add pictures we relised it was a lot harder than we thought. We spent an hour and a bit working on a way to do this and that was a lesson itself. After this we had to create a fake twitter account for  a scientist that studied something to do with space this went with our theme for Natural Science. We did this on a website called Twister we had to create a twitter name for them and a tweet as if they were alive. We then had an art lesson were we had to design a new character for the TV show Adventure Time we did this using apps on our ipads.

this was one of our first lessons which went our theme of space for science.

Friday the 7th

First technology day

Today as soon as we arrived we started running tests on all the programs we are using. Those of us that hadn't been able to download them were helped by the technician who stayed for the whole day to solve all problems that we had. If all our things were working the we were free to explore all the programs and practice using them.

Thursday the 6th

Move in day

Today we all brought things from home to re-decorate the science room. Before we could do anything we had to move everything that was in the science room out this included tables, chairs and equipment. We then put in chairs, cushions and blankets to make the room a comfortable work space.
